About Netsuke:

Netsuke originated in Japan during the 17th century.

Traditional Japanese clothing did not include pockets. People used cords to suspend small containers and personal belongings from their sash.

A netsuke acted as a small toggle or fastener. Holes allowed the cord to pass through the carving.

Over time, netsuke developed from practical objects into highly detailed miniature sculptures. Collectors now appreciate them for their craftsmanship, subject matter and decorative appeal.
